To determine the relationship between two people first establish the most recent common ancestors.
Find the relationship of the ancestors to the older (generation) person along the top row of the table.
Find the relationship of the ancestors to the younger (generation) person along the left hand column of the table.
Trace vertically from the first person and horizontally from the second to find the relationship.
In most cases two cousins will descend from a pair of ancestors, but sometimes from only one, ie one person descends from a first marriage and the other from a second marriage. When this happens the table will work in the same way but the relationship is only half, ie half second cousin or whatever.
