James and Elizabeth were married in St John's Sligo in September 1844
James was described as a boot and shoe maker when he married in 1844 and a shoemaker in 1856 when his son George William was baptized.
The 1856 address for James and Elizabeth was Towney Fortes (Tonafortes) townland, and the 1901 census shows 80 year old shoemaker James SLATOR in Knappagh Beg (Sligo Town) township, St Johns, St John's parish along with his 76 year old wife Elizabeth and their unmarried son Robert, also a shoemaker. There were other shoemaking Sleators in Sligo during the 19th century, including William Sleater aged 81 (presumably James' brother) so very much a family business.
