John Haynes & Sarah Maria (Blanche) Sedgebear

Terry's Great Grandparents

John Ayre Vickery Haynes was born 02 October 1844 in Clifton, Bristol, son of John Ayre Haynes and Maria Haynes formerly Vickery. The birth certificate is the only document I've seen with a middle name, but this is the only John Haynes birth registraton in the right time frame with a father also named John Haynes, as per his marriage certificate. Terry has a DNA match (54 cM across 4 segments, so 4th-6th cousin) with the surname Ayre who has confirmed that his Ayre ancestors were in Bristol during the ninteenth century.

John was with his mother and two younger sisters in Bristol in 1851, 1861 and 1871 and with wife and baby daughter in 1881. He was a pupil teacher in 1861, a clerk in 1881, a bookkeeper in 1880, accountant in 1881 and commercial clerk in 1887. He died March 1887 in Barton Regis, Bristol.

John and Sarah were married at St Silas, Bristol on 14 April 1879, witnesses were Mary Haynes, Emily Haynes (John's sister) and Sarah Ann Rees.

Sarah Maria Sedgebear was born 1850 in Clifton, Bristol, to John Sedgebear and Sarah Parris. Her first marriage was to Robert Parker in 1870; there were no children to that marriage and Robert died in 1878. A year later she married John Haynes at St Silas Bristol. Their first child Edith was born in Cardiff followed by two sons born in Bristol, then John died from phthisis in 1887.

Some time between 1887-1891 Sarah and her children moved to Birkenhead, Cheshire, reason unknown. From the 1891 census onwards she was known as Blanche in all documents, except for the 1939 register and her death registration. In 1991 the family were boarding with a famly named Swan and Blanche was described as a sick nurse and in 1901 she was working as a monthly nurse with one of the Swan's sons and his own family and newborn baby. In 1901 she was living with her daughter Edith and her children.

Blanche clearly played a large part in the upbringing of Edith's sons both as a live-in child minder and also for several years 1913-1915 and 1919-1928 whilst Edith was in Canada. In July 1928 Blanche travelled to Canada with two of them to join Edith in Kingston, Ontario. Edith died in 1938 and a few weeks later Blanche at the age of 88 travelled back to England alone. She appears in the 1939 register as Sarah M and was living in Birkenhead with her son Harold and his family in Birkenhead. Sarah Maria died in 1941 aged 91.
