Research into a stray Cushman in Lancashire led to the discovery that he was born in Ireland, and as follow-up I looked at all of the
COUCHMANs, CUSHMANs, and CASHMANs in the English and Irish censuses.

The conclusions I draw from this is there are two distinct surnames; COUCHMAN which originates in the Cranbrook area of Kent,
spreading across the county and into Sussex and London, and CASHMAN which originates in Ireland.
In 1901 CASHMANs were predominantly in Co Cork with a few in Co Kerry and a few in Co Waterford so definitely along the south coast of Ireland.
CUSHMAN seems to be a variant of either surname.
COUCHMAN also has the occasional phonetic variants of COWCHMAN and COACHMAN in older records.
