Brenda's Blog
It seems to be the current fashion to keep a web-log. I'm going to give it a try although I'm not really a diary person. This will be a mix of crafty, lacy and family history doings and I'll try, but no promises, to add something to it each week.
I'm not planning on having a list of public comments here but you are welcome to contact me about anything on this blog.

As I said, I'm not good at keeping a diary!
I have been busy though. I've knitted two pairs of socks with the wool I bought at Exeter. The blue pair are knitted exactly to the pattern supplied with the Opal yarn with a classic turned heel and paired decreases at the toes with the last few stitches grafted together. The pink pair have the heel turned in the same way, but I did a textured pattern for the cuff and upper foot and omitted the stitches between the paired decreases for heels and toes.

With several birthdays etc coming up I have added a few cards to my stock.

I am also working on a long term patchwork project with Dresden Plate blocks.

Nothing last weekend as I was in Exeter for The Lace Guild Convention. On the Sunday marning I did the beaded bracelet with Jan Tredidgio. A straightforward torchon design with seed beads added to some of the pairs, then trapped between threads as required. The technique was easy enough but the tensioning needs more practice.
This evening I have made a couple of cards using the silk painting samples I did at the last TACKS meeting. I am pleased with the iris flower (6" x 6" card) but the butterflies went skewiff when I matted it, so I ended up mounting it diagonally onto an 8" x8" card, but it still doesn't look right!

Emma is 40 today - and I forgot to take a scan of her birthday card!
On Saturday I went to the craft club TACKS in Meopham. Last month I did the yo-yo workshop. All along they were saying 'tee shirt trim' to me so I used every scrap of the Liberty print I was using and there were just enough yo-yos (Suffolk Puffs) to stitch around the front neckline of a tee shirt and then I added a purple and green sparkly bead to the centre of each yo-yo. and it got a lot of nice comments when people noticed what I was wearing. It was also a good excuse to buy a new tee shirt!

This morning I collected my paintings from the exhibition in Meopham library. This was the first exhibition staged by Meopham Green Artists and we had some very positive feedback. My pictures were an acrylic of Binney Road in the Snow and two framed iPad digi images, Sunset over Grand Baie and Thee Men in a Boat.

This week I have been in contact with a 3rd cousin with whom I share 3x gt grandparents Thomas Turvey and Elizabeth Young. This has been quite a productive contact as he has Thomas's death certificate and I have Elizabeth's so we have been able ot exchange the info. Robert also sent me some interesting 19th century newspaper articles about various Turveys, but I think that he has been confusing our Turveys from Wick with those in the neighboring Holy Cross parish. The name Turvey isn't particularly common (currently around 2,500 people in England and Wales use it) but around Pershore in Worcestershire it is/was localy common.
To sort out the confusion I have compiled a spreadsheet listing all 78 Turvey births registered in the Pershore Registration District from 1837-1875 and then used the censuses and Family Search to match each of those children to their parents. Although there are still a few not yet found in censuses to link them to their parents, there were another nine people found in the censuses who were said to have been born in Pershore, Wick or Holy Cross whose births do not appear to have been registered. This confirms the estimates that in the early years of civil registration 10% or more of births were not registered.

Paige had a birthday this week; I finished her card which was a re-make of a shop bought card given to me some time ago, matted and layered onto an 8" x 8" blank with added bling. I also made a money wallet, but at 14 years old I daresay she was more interested in the contents than in the wallet.
