George Henry Barber was born Q3 1881 Hoo RD vol 2a page 507 the third of eight siblings
born to John Barber and Julia Ford (or Foord) who were married at Stoke on 11 November 1876.

In 1881 John, Julia and the two eldest children were living at Jacobs Farm Stoke. John was a Farm Bailiff.
In 1891 the family were still there with all the children except Harry who had died in infancy and Albert who was not born until a few months later. John was a Working Farm Bailiff and the eldest son John William was a Farm House boy.
In 1901 the family were living at Castle Cottages, Stoke. Son John had left home, MaryAnn was a general domestic servant (but living with her own family) George was an Agricultural labourer, Charles was a Team man (Agricultural Horse) on a farm and Ernest delivered Telegraph postal messages and their father John was still a Bailiff.
By 1911 John and Julia had moved to Church Farm, Allhallows and John was still employed as a farm bailiff. Only the middle son Charles was still at home.
George joined the Royal Navy on 29 December 1902 at Chatham. He was enumerated on HMS Forward in the third flotilla at Chatham Dockyard in 1911. By the end of 1915 he was a Stoker 1st class aboard HMS Natal when an internal explosion on 30 December caused the deaths of 421 sailors, civilians and children. George’s body was never recovered for burial. His name is on the Naval memorial in Chatham Dockyard.

George would have known his paternal grandparents who were John Barber, born Ospringe/Faversham and Harriet Chapman, born Loose/Maidsone and who were married in 1850 at Frindsbury. In 1851 they were living at North Street, Hoo and in 1861, 1871 and 1881 at Tudors Farm Stoke and at Barber’s Cottages, Hoo (near to Hoo Common) in 1891.

George’s mother Julia was the youngest of ten children born to Maria (Sudds) and John Barber who lived in High Halstow. Maria was a widow in 1861 when Julia was only six years old. John’s death has not been found but Maria lived until Q4 1891. In the 1891 census she was living in Lower Stoke Road, Stoke with an unmarried son. George would have been only 7 when she died.
