Ernest Edward Barber

Ernest was born 03 March 1887, bapt 26 March 1877 at Stoke, son of John and Julia Barber.
He was the younger brother of George Henry Barber.

As a young man, some time between 1901 and 1912 he emigrated to Ontario Canada. On 18 January 1912 he married Florence Sutton, in the village of Eglington in the county of York, Ontario. her nationality was English, but it’s not clear whether she was born in England or in Canada to English parents.

On 18 August 1915 he signed up to the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force and sailed from Halifax (Canada) to Liverpool in March/April 1916 and arrived at Bramshott Hampshire on 09 April

On 04 June 1916 he made a will leaving everything to his wife Florence. That was witnessed by fellow soldiers at Bramshott Camp, Hampshire and on 09 June he embarked for France and was on active service until he was killed in Action on 09 April 1917.

The paperwork following his death gives Florence’s address as Newmarket, Ontario altered to Church Farm, Allhallows (Ernest’s parents’ address) but then there is a note that she returned to Canada.

Ernest’s parents, John and Julia, were from Hoo and but as detailed in his brother George’s chapter they lived mostly in Stoke, but by 1911 they had moved to Church Farm, Allhallows.

Julia died aged 76 in Q1 1931, Strood district vol 2a page 1180

In 1939 John was a patient in Orpington Hospital , originally the Canadian General Hospital to provide care for Canadian troops injured in WW1.
